Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
