The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
